City proposal would help residents pay to paint curbs in no-parking zones by driveways

Wauwatosa homeowners can pay $120 to have the city's contractor paint the curbs next to their driveways to denote the four-foot no-parking zone on each side. That cost would be reduced under a plan under consideration.

Have you ever wondered whether you were parking too close to someone's driveway — or whether someone else had parked their car too close to your driveway?

Here's the rule: City of Wauwatosa ordinances prohibit parking within four feet of the entrance of a driveway, alley or private road. And that rule may seem quite clear, but how easy is it to measure four feet while navigating a car into place?

The City of Wauwatosa tries to make it a little easier to identify parking spaces by encouraging residents to paint the curb yellow next to their driveways, though the city also charges residents $120 to hire a painting contractor to complete the job. A new proposal to be considered by the Common Council would offset a large portion of that cost, so more residents will take advantage of this option.

Brad Foley, who represents District 1 on the Common Council, is proposing the financial assistance. It is scheduled to be discussed by the Transportation Affairs Committee at its 6:30 p.m. meeting Oct. 20 at City Hall and online.

Foley's District includes portions of the East Tosa neighborhoods south of North Avenue, and he said in a memo outlining his proposal that by more clearly marking parking zones residents there would benefit, as well as in other high-traffic neighborhoods.
