City restores Underwood Elementary crossing guard in response to scrutiny of locations

The city's initial revised 2026-27 guard assignments had left Underwood Elementary School with no guard, either on the school property or in its neighborhood — the only city school without coverage.

Students walking to Underwood Elementary School on Wauwatosa's west side again have the assistance of a crossing guard, under last-minute changes to the city's guard assignments as the new school year got underway on Sept. 1.

Underwood's new crossing guard, at least for now: That would be Max Cavazos.

"Love it," Cavazos told Tosa Forward News on Sept. 4 when asked about her job at 113th Street and Potter Road. Wearing a reflective vest and waving her unmistakable stop sign, she has been stationed on that corner all week, for an hour in the mornings and an hour in the afternoons.

That comes as a relief to Underwood parents. The City of Wauwatosa agreed to restore the crossing guard at the school after an Aug. 31 meeting between city administrators, elected officials and Wauwatosa School District leaders, including Tosa Mayor Dennis McBride, City Administrator James Archambo and Schools Superintendent Demond Means.
