Mayor Dennis McBride has appointed Deyanira Nevarez as Wauwatosa city clerk, pending a confirmation vote by the Common Council.

Nevarez, who attended high school in Beloit and earned her bachelor's degree in justice from Mount Mary University, has worked for the City of Beloit for the past six years in a variety of leadership roles. She served most recently as administrator of Beloit's municipal court.

The Wauwatosa Common Council is scheduled to vote on Nevarez's confirmation as Tosa City Clerk at its 7 p.m. meeting Sept. 30 at City Hall and on Zoom.

If confirmed, Nevarez is scheduled to begin work on Nov. 17, succeeding former City Clerk Steve Braatz, who left Tosa over the summer after he was hired as South Milwaukee city clerk.

The City of Wauwatosa advertised the position as "city clerk/management analyst," with an advertised pay range is $83,928 to $107,245.

The position "is a key member of the city’s administrative management team and is responsible for managing all statutory duties of the City Clerk in accordance with Wisconsin State Statutes, while also supporting strategic municipal service initiatives," Wauwatosa said in its job description. "This position ensures regulatory compliance in licensing, records management, and elections while also advancing broader initiatives such as data-informed decision-making, customer service innovation, and internal support coordination."

The city clerk job posting elicited 60 applications, and city leaders narrowed those applications down to seven top candidates, according to City Administrator James Archambo and Human Resourses Director Beth Mbow. They said in a memo to the Common Council that interviews were conducted in early September.

"We were very fortunate to have a very strong candidate pool with a group of candidates with diverse municipal experience and expertise," Archambo and Mbow said. "At the conclusion of the process, the decision was made that Deyanira Nevarez is the best candidate for the position."

In addition to serving Beloit as court administrator, Nevarez worked as a human resources assistant and court clerk. She previously worked as a legal assistant/paralegal for Dobberstein Law Firm in Brookfield. She earned a master's degree in public administration from Northern Illinois University, and she is bilingual in English and Spanish.

"Ms. Nevarez brings strong and broad experience, leadership skills, knowledge, and a passion for public service to our Municipal Services team and Clerk’s Office," Archambo and Mbow said in recommending her for the job.

Braatz had served as Wauwatosa city clerk since 2021, after replacing Melanie Kollmansberger. Before that, Tosa's city clerk office had been led for more than 20 years by Carla Ledesma, who retired in 2019.
