The Wauwatosa School Board has issued a statement voicing support for Superintendent Demond Means after the board said an independent review into a recent incident at Whitman Middle School concluded there was no misconduct by Means or other district administrators.

School Board President Lynne Woehrle, on behalf of the full board, read the statement out loud near the beginning of the board's Oct. 12 meeting. She said some Whitman staff members had raised concerns about "the increased presence of district-level leadership" at the school.

"Among those concerns were allegations that, while assisting with student transitions in the hallways, the superintendent interacted with certain staff and students in an unprofessional manner," Woehrle said in reading the statement. The board asked an attorney for the district to coordinate "an independent fact-finding effort," which "determined that the superintendent did not engage in any misconduct in violation of board policies."

The statement did not provide further details about the incident in question. Tosa Forward News has requested documentation related to the incident but has not yet received any records from the district. In response to an Oct. 12 inquiry about the status of that records request, a district administrator said all such requests are fulfilled in the order they are received.

Tosa Forward News, in an email, also offered Means the opportunity to comment for this story, which will be updated upon receiving a response.
