City officials have been working with their counterparts at the state Department of Transportation on the design of a major joint project overhauling Highway 181, which bisects Wauwatosa along Wauwatosa Avenue and Glenview Avenue and through Tosa Village.

Construction isn't expected to start until 2031, though engineers presented revised plans this week at a Common Council committee meeting ahead of a public information meeting next week.

Residents interested in learning more are invited to the public information meeting anytime from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, on the lower level of City Hall, 7725 W. North Ave. The city also is posting updates on its website, and the state's project page is here.

"It's a cool project. We're pretty excited about it," Jeni Schroeder, a city engineer, said toward the end of her Sept. 22 presentation to the Transportation Affairs Committee. Video of the presentation is posted to the city's meetings portal.

The project is estimated to cost $27 million, with the state covering most of the expense.

The following are some of the key diagrams of road designs and intersection work contained in the latest project plans. In some cases, the images represent only a portion of the project between major intersections. The full presentation, with all diagrams, is posted here.
