The sidewalks have reopened and street barricades are now gone from the former construction zone on Wauwatosa Avenue and Harwood Avenue heading south into Tosa Village.
There, inside the development that replaced the old St. Bernard Catholic Church and Wauwatosa Catholic School, crews continue putting the final touches on a three-story apartment building that now dominates the landscape of the neighborhood.
And perhaps most significant, at least for the first residents of Vista Village, the building has opened to tenants. They began moving in Aug. 1, and there is still availability for people interested in checking out the facility's 153 new apartments, ranging from studios to three-bedroom units. The apartments are about 30% leased so far, according to the developer, Three Leaf Partners.
Did we mention residents will have access to a recreational putting green in the courtyard?
As the apartments have begun filling up, Tosa Forward News visited the facility for a tour recently to give readers an inside look at the new apartments and their amenities.
Some physical elements of the former church and school were salvaged for reuse as features in the new building. The block's southern-most green remains open to the public, while the interior courtyard serves as a unique social sanctuary just for residents. And some of the apartments' windows offer grand views that truly live up to the name, Vista Village.
"Vista Village breathes new life into one of downtown Wauwatosa's most prominent locations, honoring the history of the site and the character of the village it calls home, " John Ford, Three Leaf Partners' chief development officer, said in a written statement to Tosa Forward News for this story.

The two photo galleries below, one showing the building's environment and amenities and the other peeking inside some of the apartments, are being offered exclusively to paying members and supporters of Tosa Forward News.
