The Wauwatosa Police Department, through its school resource officers at Tosa East and Tosa West high schools, is urging students not to participate in toilet-papering of homes or other acts of vandalism, warning the pranks could lead to unexpected danger.
The messages were forwarded by the Wauwatosa School District to families of students in the two schools. They were signed by Officer Mel Albiter, the school resource officer at Tosa East, and Officer Farris Griffin, the school resource officer at Toas West.
"Recently, there have been multiple incidents involving reckless driving and unsafe behavior related to toilet papering (TP'ing). These actions have resulted in three vehicle crashes, each tied to the same type of behavior. This is extremely concerning," the officers said.
"Let us be clear: It is only a matter of time before someone — a student, a community member, or a police officer — is seriously injured or worse."
The messages gave no further explanation for the timing of the police warning, though both schools are preparing for homecoming dances, Tosa West's on Sept. 27 and Tosa East's on Oct. 11.
"Toilet papering someone’s yard may be seen as a tradition or a prank, but when it leads to property damage, trespassing, or dangerous driving, it becomes unacceptable and unsafe," the officers said. "Your actions on private property have consequences, and your behavior in vehicles — especially when speeding or driving carelessly — puts lives at risk."
The officers also asked students to "immediately stop any activity that involves reckless driving, discharging orbeez guns, or disrespect toward others' property."
"Your safety and the well-being of our entire community depend on your responsible choices."
