Vehicle fee hike of $5 included in Tosa's proposed city budget for 2027

The city's $15 fee, sometimes referred to as a "wheel tax," has been in place since 2025. When combined with the state and county fees, the total registration fee could increase from $130 to $135.

A construction project to add two raised medians on North Avenue at 120th Street is shown in a photo released by the City of Wauwatosa in September. City officials say the vehicle registration fee has been important in paying for this and other traffic calming measures.

It could get slightly more expensive to own a car in Wauwatosa under the proposed 2027 city budget that has begun making its way through the review and approval process.

The Executive Budget, which is the preliminary draft submitted jointly by the mayor and city administrator for the Common Council to consider, was presented Sept. 29 at a council meeting at City Hall. One of the highlights was a proposed $5 increase in the vehicle registration fee that that city collects on all vehicles registered in Wauwatosa.

That fee itself is somewhat new. Sometimes referred to as a "wheel tax," the Tosa council first adopted a $15 annual vehicle registration fee in the 2025 budget. Wauwatosa residents also pay a county vehicle fee of $30, on top of the state's $85 fee.

If the latest proposal is approved, annual renewals for Tosa cars would increase from $130 to $135.

Video of the 2027 budget presentation can be viewed on the city's meetings portal, but the budget document has not yet been posted online. Past years' budgets are posted here.
