Weekly digest: Storm debris cleanup, a bank robbery arrest and Tosa vs. Ireland

Today's weekly digest will be a brief one, as Tosa Forward News regroups in advance of what we hope will be a busy and productive fall.

Hart Park again has been in the news, first because the Tosa Kickers U16 boys soccer team welcomed the Bohemians from Galway, Ireland, for a game last Saturday organized by the Kickers organization and CelticMKE. Galway won the game, 2-1, but both teams won the culinary sweepstakes after the game, when they gathered for a meal at Leff's Lucky Town.

The Kickers organization has recruited its own teams in the past to travel for overseas competition, but this was the first time it hosted a team from Ireland, in coordination with CelticMKE.

WISN-TV was the latest station to report on the Tosa East football team's return to Hart Park after last year's flooding. The varsity team's home opener is tonight.

We hope you survived Tuesday's storm without too much damage. Trees and branches were down all over Tosa, and some neighborhoods dealt with extended power outages.

The city is making the rounds to pick up storm debris, but those pickups are limited to debris from the city's street-side trees. If you have other yard waste, you can drop it off free of charge through Aug. 29 at the city's drop-off center.

Wauwatosa was among the communities hit Aug. 18 by heavy downpours and strong wind, which snapped branches, uprooted whole trees and temporarily knocked out power to parts of the city.

The PNC Bank branch at 2360 N. 124th St. was robbed last Saturday, sparking a regional manhunt for the suspect. Tosa police announced later in the week that the suspect, a 33-year-old Milwaukee resident, was arrested Tuesday evening, and charges are pending.

We hate to burst the bubble of any Tosa student who assumed this was the mythic endless summer. Your summer vacation does have an end date: Sept. 1. As families prepare for the return to school, here's an announcement from the district inviting older high school students to consider applying for the role of student representative on the Tosa School Board.

The position is open to 11th and 12th graders. The student representatives serve for one year starting in October, and though unable to vote, they "provide valuable student perspectives during the board's regular meetings," the district said. "Representatives are encouraged to participate in discussions, answer questions, and communicate board actions and topics of interest with students at their high school."

Deadline to apply is Sept. 8.
