City of Wauwatosa public works crews have begun their curbside pickup rounds to assist residents with removal of downed branches from the powerful storm that struck the region on Aug. 18, but residents are encouraged to read the fine print.
Curbside pick-up is only for storm debris from the city's trees, meaning those growing between the sidewalk and the street. "If this changes, we'll let you know," the city says in its online guidance to residents.
In addition, the city is waiving fees for residents bringing any other yard waste to the municipal drop-off center through Aug. 29. The drop-off center is open Wednesdays and Saturdays and located at 11100 W. Walnut Road.
Additional work requests for removal of downed branches and debris from street-side trees can be submitted at wauwatosa.gov/service.
Milwaukee County was under a tornado warning for part of the evening Aug. 18 as Wauwatosa and other communities where hit by downpours and strong wind, which snapped branches, uprooted whole trees and temporarily knocked out power to parts of the city.
The National Weather Service reported that conditions in some places were intense enough to create wind speeds of more than 70 mph, though only one tornado was confirmed to have touched down, near Colgate in Washington County.
