Supporters of skateboarding in Tosa are invited to an evening fundraiser at Hart Park on Saturday, June 20.

Skateboards are optional. Love of the Tosa Skatepark is expected.

The event from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Muellner Building is organized by Tosa Skateboarders United and intended to solicit donations to support the city's plan to add lights to the Tosa Skatepark, which would enable the popular recreational facility to remain open later in the evening.

The fundraiser was timed for the eve of "Go Skate Day" (June 21) and the Summer Solstice (also June 21), the longest day of the year. The event will feature food, a silent auction, games and a raffle.

"While we celebrate the sun, we are working toward a future where our skaters don't have to stop when it goes down," Tres Mansfield, a Tosa Skateboarders United board member, said by email.

Partial funding for the project, estimated to cost $180,000, was included in the city's five-year capital improvement plan, as adopted by the Common Council last fall. City leaders have said the cost of adding lights to the Tosa Skatepark would be split evenly between city taxpayers and private fundraising efforts, each contributing $90,000.

Tosa Skateboarders United, which led efforts to create and open the skate park in 2015, kicked off its fundraising campaign with a "flash mob" event at the park in November. Information on how to donate to the campaign can be found on the organization's website.
