If you live, work, study or play in Wauwatosa, the odds are close to 100% that you have some experience with Highway 181.
It's the main north-south route through Tosa Village and includes Wauwatosa Avenue to the north and Glenview Avenue to the south. And it is due for an overhaul.
City and state planners have been updating the designs of the coming reconstruction project on Highway 181, due to start in 2031. The latest designs were presented at a committee meeting this week, and the public is invited to an informational open-house meeting from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, on the lower level of City Hall.

We have an update on the status of July 4 fireworks in Wauwatosa. The good news is the city is planning to bring the fireworks display back in 2027. One caveat is that the police department is insisting that it be scheduled on a different day from the Independence Day Parade, because of staff constraints.
And enrollment numbers are up for Blue Door Academy, the child care contractor that is providing before- and after-school care at 10 Tosa elementary schools this year.
The school district is encouraging more parents to sign up by Oct. 1 in an effort to meet the program's per-site minimums. Otherwise, administrators may need to consolidate some sites.

The Milwaukee Business Journal took a closer look at the plan for 14 housing units on that narrow triangle parcel of city-owned land in Tosa Village near the Harmonee Bridge — the "missing tooth" site, as the Business Journal calls it, quoting a former city development director.
The City of Wauwatosa posted information to social media about a test site on 76th between Blue Mound Road and Wisconsin Avenue for a traffic "chicane."
A chi-what?
"A chicane uses alternating curb extensions (seen in this trial by using traffic barrels placed on alternating sides of the street) to encourage lower driving speeds," according to the city.
What do you think?

Finally, some great football was played last Friday in a close crosstown-rival game. In the end, Tosa West prevailed over Tosa East. Congrats to Tosa West, and to both schools for playing hard.
