School district launches $60 million in building upgrades from 2024 capital referendum
Washington Elementary School is one of several Tosa schools included in the latest round of improvements, part of a $60 million referendum approved by voters in 2024.

As Wauwatosa students wrap up classes this week and leave for summer vacation, construction crews are getting ready to kick a series of district facilities improvements into high gear.

Voters passed a capital referendum in November 2024 totaling $60 million. Since then — after a year and a half of design work, planning and bidding — the Wauwatosa School District is moving forward with the upgrades at six of its elementary schools and its two high schools.

Families and neighbors likely already have noticed security fencing around the elementary school construction sites at Eisenhower, Madison, Roosevelt and Washington. Crews have focused on exterior work while school has been in session, such as masonry and concrete repairs and replacement of doors and entrance hardware.

After the last day of the school year on June 11, the projects will expand to interior work.

The projects in the first phases include security and safety upgrades, accessibility improvements, exterior maintenance, interior finishes and systems upgrades, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Some of that work also will be completed at Jefferson Elementary School, Wauwatosa Montessori School and Wauwatosa East and Wauwatosa West high schools.

The school district is posting updates about the projects on its 2024 referendum webpage here.
