The Tosa Wildlife Habitat initiative is an environmental community group looking to certify Wauwatosa as a Wildlife Habitat Community, through neighborly participation. An informational event will be held at the Wauwatosa Public Library on May 9, to help interested residents get involved with the project.
“We have exceeded every [other] requirement for the certification,” said Frankie Garr, volunteer for the Tosa Wildlife Habitat. “Now, to finally become the first certified city in Milwaukee County, we only need 79 more certified gardens.”
This initiative is part of a nationwide program under the National Wildlife Federation, an environmental advocacy group. Since 1997, its Community Wildlife Habitat initiative has worked with communities across the country to make the land more habitable for wildlife. The desired result is to develop a strong sense of cohabitation within American communities, emphasizing the idea that the land we live on is shared.
“It’s a passion project for all of us as gardeners,” said Garr. She noted the Tosa group was started by Cornelia Beilke and now is led by seven residents.
