Tosa secures $22.8M in state grants in support of fire merger with West Allis

The grants are not restricted to supporting fire and EMS services, meaning the two cities can use the money for unrelated municipal expenses, in addition to helping to set up the new joint fire department.

Tosa secures $22.8M in state grants in support of fire merger with West Allis

The cities of Wauwatosa and West Allis are in the middle of implementing the merger of their two fire departments into the combined Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue, and one central financial uncertainty has been resolved in the cities' favor.

Tosa announced last week that it had secured $22.8 million over the next five years through Wisconsin's Innovation Grant program, which offers financial incentives to municipalities that collaborate on providing municipal services. West Allis also was expected to apply for and receive the same grants but has not yet announced confirmation of those grants.

The grants, though tied to the joint fire department, are not restricted to supporting fire and EMS services, meaning the two cities can use the money for unrelated municipal expenses, in addition to helping to set up the new joint fire department.

Wauwatosa, in a news release announcing its grants, said staff would submit a plan for consideration by the Common Council at its July 28 meeting on determining how the grant money should be spent.

"The grant funding will allow the city to advance major priorities while strengthening its long-term financial position," Tosa's news release said. "Rather than relying solely on local tax dollars, Wauwatosa can make strategic investments that improve city facilities, reduce future costs and deliver lasting value for residents."
