Wetland restoration project planned for section of Firefly Grove Park

The city opened its newest park to great fanfare in 2025, offering the rare green space with recreational options for west-side residents. Now it is considering an agreement with MMSD to help improve how the southeast corner handles stormwater.

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District has offered up to $100,000 to support a City of Wauwatosa wetland restoration project in the southeast corner of Firefly Grove Park.

The project would be conducted by the city with the MMSD funding provided under a proposed green infrastructure funding agreement, which was taken up April 22 by the city's Board of Public Works. "The project will restore wetland function, improve biological conditions and increase wildlife habitat" in a 3-acre wetland in an undeveloped portion of the park, according to the project description.

Maggie Anderson, a civil engineer on the city's staff, outlined the project and the agreement with MMSD, saying full funding has been secured to tend to this section of the park. It "could use some heavy restoration" due to years of sediment build-up, she said.

The board voted to approve the agreement with MMSD to secure the funding.
